There are noninvasive
techniques for reducing facial lines and wrinkles. They produce quick
results with minimal downtime.
Botox (now FDA approved) is a toxin that is injected in small
amounts into muscles in the upper portion of the face to smooth the
lines and wrinkles caused by contraction of these muscles during frowning
or squinting. Horizontal forehead lines, vertical lines between the
eyebrows, and crows feet around the eyes can all be significantly
reduced by injecting small amounts of this substance into the underlying
muscles. Treatments take ten to twenty minutes and results can be
expected in three to five days. The effect usually lasts three to
five months, at which time further injections may be needed to maintain
results.
Collagen and acellular human dermis (Cymetra)
are injectable substances used to soften frown lines, smooth wrinkles
and augment lips. They act by plumping the tissues. Collagen
lasts around two to three months and requires a pretreatment test.
Cymetra can last three to six months and does not require
a pretreatment test.
Fat can be removed in small amounts from the abdomen or thighs
with a syringe and injected into the lips, wrinkles and frown lines.
Slightly more post-treatment bruising and swelling may occur because
overfilling the treated area is done (some of the injected fat is
absorbed by the body). The effects of injected fat also fade with
time (4 to 8 months) but a percentage (50%) become permanent and multiple
treatments can lead to lasting results.
