A breast lift
(mastopexy) raises and reshapes sagging breasts. It can correct
changes associated with ageing, pregnancy, or loss of a significant
amount of weight.A breast lift elevates the breast tissue, removes
excess skin from the lower portion of the breast, and reshapes the
remaining breast skin. The nipple and surrounding aereola are moved
to a higher position.
A lift can be
combined with a breast implant if you decide to have your breasts
enlarged at the same time.A variety of incisions are utilized, depending
on the degree of lift needed. Minor lifts are done through incisions
around the aerola only. More significant lifts require an incision
that extends vertically down the breast and horizontally along the
crease underneath the breast. The resulting scars are permanent,
but will fade with time.
After surgery,
the breasts are wrapped in a dressing and placed in a special support
bra. Swelling and bruising occur and usually resolve within seven
to ten days. There may be decreased breast or nipple sensation,
which is usually temporary. Most patients return to work in one
to two weeks.
