A breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) removes excess breast tissue and reshapes large, sagging breasts.Excessively large and drooping breasts can cause back, neck, shoulder and breast pain, problems with posture, and skin rashes. They can make it difficult to engage in normal physical activities.

The procedure involves removing excess breast tissue and skin as well as elevating the remaining breast tissue and nipples. Most breast reductions are done through incisions that encircle the aereola, extend vertically down the breast, and horizontally along the crease underneath the breast. Dr. Wiener may use smaller, more limited incisions in some cases. Liposuction can also be added to remove excess fat from the sides of the breast near the armpit, creating a more contoured look.

After surgery, the breasts are wrapped in a dressing and placed in a special support bra. Swelling and bruising occur and usually resolve within seven to ten days. There may be decreased breast or nipple sensation, which is usually temporary. Most patients return to work in one to two weeks.
