A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes excess skin and fat to improve the contour of the abdomen. The underlying muscles and abdominal wall can also be tightened. This can be especially beneficial to correct changes associated with pregnancy or significant weight loss.

A horizontal incision just above the pubic area and within the panty-line is utilized. The length of the incision varies with the amount of skin and fat to be removed. There may be an incision around the navel. Modified (or mini) tummy tucks can be done through smaller incisions if the excess skin and fat is limited to the lower abdomen below the navel. Liposuction is often added to achieve the best possible contour.

After surgery there will be bruising and swelling. A small plastic drain may be in place, and is removed in two to five days. A post-surgical garment is worn for several weeks. Most patients return to work in two weeks.
